About Julia
For Julia Cavalieri, becoming a professional artist meant returning to a passion she had set aside. After completing a law degree, moving to Paris and spending years working in the corporate world, she rediscovered the deeply satisfying act of drawing – an activity she’d enjoyed since childhood. Largely self-taught, this return to her artistic roots became a profound and therapeutic process of self-expression. Her work is physical proof of the power of creativity to make sense of the world.
Julia explores potent themes such as time, memory, loss and resilience, and invites viewers to find echoes of their own stories within her work.

Studio and Gallery Space in Houghton
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Julia moved her studio closer to home. At the time she was working from the back of a motor racing garage in Wynberg, an industrial area near Sandton, a commercial centre in Johannesburg. As the size of her canvases and installations grew, she needed a large space.
It was fortunate that a studio and gallery space in the suburbs became available.
Her studio in Houghton has become a sanctuary. Here, amid sketches and works in progress, the emotional landscapes that define her art come to life.

Julia in her studio. Seeking to refine her practice, Julia recently travelled to Florence, Italy, for an immersive course in traditional marble sculpting. It was truly the experience of a lifetime, defined by the perfect balance of pasta, strong cappuccinos, and a generous coating of marble dust.
